Scott Boim - President Invites you to the September 8 Meeting "ASSE's First Century"
Stevens Steakhouse
5332 E. Stevens Place City of Commerce, CA 90040-3914 US
Wednesday, September 8, 5:30PM to 8:30PM Phone: (310) 386-5844 Board Meets for 2011 Planning A great year is coming up! President Scott Boim called the first planning meeting for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. As with many plans, these are in the early stages. However, his term looks like a good one. The year will begin with the September 8 meeting. It will be a history-based program with Bruce Brown as the speaker. This will kick off our activities for the ASSE Centennial Celebration. Those of us around for the founding must be there. October will be the Joint Technical Symposium. November will be a sea-bottom to crown-block discussion of the BP Gulf catastrophe from the perspective of people actually on the scene. December will be a social event with a holiday theme. January is reserved for the Construction Practice Specialty. February will be a special student program to advance student sections and encourage mentoring. For March a Studio or entertainment venue tour is in the works. April is earthquake month, so we can expect to shake things up with emergency preparedness and earthquake information. Cinco de Mayo means a SPALW workshop or seminar to assist with working with our Latino workforce. June will be the awards, installation,, and WISE meeting. Details will be made available through our electronically distributed newsletter and the web site. Keep watching for news. Coming up will be a survey of the membership. Do fill it out, and be sure to let us know what you think about the programs and give us any ideas you have. INLAND EMPIRE SECTION MEETING The Inland Empire Meeting was held July 28, with a full breakfast and an unforgettable program. ASSE Inland Empire arranged a tour and program to see the Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Facility (ARFF) at the San Bernardino International Airport. This is western regional full-scale training center for airport fire and rescue personnel. Used by aviation fire and rescue personnel as a tactical training center, we got a rare chance to see the operation of this facility to the benefit of the professional responders and the flying public. We had about 20 attendees, which was well under the maximum. From the Baltimore PDC. Only five LA members (that I saw) made it, Brown, Feeney, Escarcega, Preston, and Gates. The rest of us really missed a great PDC. Plan now to make it to Chicago next year. The keynote emphasis in Baltimore was on the greening of industry. It makes sense even if you are not on the "global warming" bandwagon. Essentially: "If you are not at the table, you are on the menu." It is a popular wave, and it can reduce costs and reduce use of resources. Coming up next year is the CENTENNIAL PDC in Chicago. It will be an amazing event. All the stops are pulled out, and there will be major publicity worldwide as we celebrate the first century of the world's oldest occupational safety organization. Look for events and activities that will showcase our profession as never before. We will be taking over McCormick Place, and Chicago is a great city for a party or a convention. Chicago is our kind of town! There is a new cocktail named for Capt. Sullenberger, who landed his Airbus in the Hudson, saving his passengers and crew. Called "The Sully," it is two hits of Grey Goose and a splash of water. The closing keynoter was Joe Malarkey with a hilarious send-up of all the self-help and success gurus called "Choose to Lose, the greatest success program." Who do we remember? General Custer. Eddie the Eagle. Others of that ilk. It was the greatest closing since we tossed fish in Seattle. June 24 Member Meeting Marge Drucker Addresses Chapter SCAIHA joined us. We presented a WISE award to Nola Kennedy, and our ASSE Chapter Kaplan SPY award to Ed Becker. Joe Kaplan dies at 95
NSC Remembers the Legacy of Joseph M. Kaplan May 29, 1914 - May 6, 2010 The National Safety Council is sad to announce the passing of its longtime colleague Joseph M. Kaplan, known to many as "Mr. Safety." On May 6, Mr. Kaplan passed away; he was 95 years old. Mr. Kaplan was a life-long friend of NSC. He served the Council in many capacities for more than 60 years, including such roles as chairman of the NSC Public Safety Education committee, member of the NSC board of directors and a member of the team that led NSC to be granted a U.S. Congressional Charter in 1953. Mr. Kaplan was the first employee and president of the Southern California Chapter of NSC. He was instrumental in building awareness for safety belt use through the "Buckle Up for Life Challenge," a program that combined a unique coalition of media, local government, employers and community groups. He also was one of the founders of the Operation Safety program. Since his initial involvement with the Los Angeles Safety Council in 1936, Mr. Kaplan was a pioneer in the creation of safety education films for the public and industry. In the 1950s, he served on the White House Commission for Traffic Safety under President Eisenhower and was the first safety council manager to serve as chairman of the Conference of State and Local Safety Organizations of the U.S. and Canada. In 2004, NSC established the Joseph M. Kaplan Safe Driver of the Year Award. The award pays tribute to Kaplan's life-long dedication to traffic safety and recognizes outstanding drivers throughout the country who have driven a significant number of miles/years behind the wheel without incurring a preventable accident. Among his many achievements, Mr. Kaplan received the ASSE J. Wesley Gebb Memorial Award in 2005 and was made a fellow of the Institute for the Advancement of Engineering in Los Angeles. Mr. Kaplan was a friend to many at the National Safety Council and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. May 27 Meeting: Joint Meeting with SCISS. What's New? Look at This! This is soooooo Cool: UNBELIEVABLE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuIJRsAuCHQ&feature=popt02us03 Los Angeles FED Bank Tour We did the tour at the Los Angeles Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. The tour lasted approximately 90 minutes and cover the Currency Processing operation areas, along with the interactive lobby exhibit, "Fed Gallery: Your Central Bank in Focus." We all had the opportunity to see more money in one place than could be imagined. We all took home a free sample of currency. April 28 Inland Empire Section Meeting Breakfast Meeting in Upland "Teaching Crane Safety In India" Jay Preston related his Indian experience of January when he taught "The Ups and Downs of Crane Safety" to some of the world's largest construction and engineering companies. He had slides and video on the Indian people, attractions, and environment, as well as additional crane safety insights. The group on hand enjoyed a mix of travelogue and technical presentation.
Bill English, floor safety expert, pioneer, researcher, inventor, and educator dies April 14. English is best known for the invention and popularization of the Variable Incidence Tribometer (VIT) slipmeter. His efforts in slip and fall prevention became legendary while employed by the Restaurant Group of Marriott Corporation in the 1970's. He was an active and influential member of the ASTM F-13 Committee and published many articles in Professional Safety and the safety press.
