February Meeting

San Andreas Fault Field Trip

We met and prepped for the trip at Days Inn in San Bernardino

We enjoyed an informative lecture: The San Andreas Fault: Blue Cut to Wrightwood. David K. Lynch, PhD We carpooled to Blue Cut in the Cajon Pass and headed up Lone Pine Valley to Wrightwood.  Blue cut is where the Pelona schist formation on one side of the fault easily demonstrates movement of the fault compared with the native sand stone on the other side.  The matching schist can be found down around Yuma.

Most of us continued
to Sheep Creek diversion channel to collect actinolite, a green crystalline mineral.  Actinolite when microcrystalline is nephrite jade, and when fibrous is one form of asbestos.

It was chilly, but we didn't really need much winter outdoor gear.   Having a truck with good ground clearance was necessary due to a significant wash out of the road, but 4WD wasn't needed for the trip.

About the author, our lecturer:
David K. Lynch, PhD, is an astronomer and planetary scientist living in Topanga, CA. When not hanging around the fault or using large telescopes on Mauna Kea, he plays fiddle, collects rattlesnakes, gives public lectures on rainbows and writes books (Color and Light in Nature, Cambridge University Press) and essays. Dr. Lynch's latest book is the
Field Guide to the San Andreas Fault, which contains twelve one-day drive trips along different parts of the fault, and includes mile-by-mile road logs and GPS coordinates for hundreds of fault features. As it happens, Dave's house was destroyed in 1994 by the magnitude 6.7 Northridge earthquake.

Book:
Field Guide to the San Andreas Fault, David K. Lynch, Thule Scientific, 2009.

Hugh Harrison "Harry" Hurt Dies.

Renowned motorcycle accident researcher and USC Professor of Safety Emeritus, Harry Hurt, has died.  Hurt was a Professional Member of the Los Angeles Chapter, and was named Motorcyclist of the Year by Motorcyclist Magazine for his seminal research into motorcycle safety and head protection.  Retiring from USC, he founded the Head Protection Research Laboratory.  Countless lives have been saved as a result of his work.  Before he joined USC, he authored Aeronautics for Naval Aviators, which is still used as a textbook by the Navy.

More information as it develops.  For more see the website:  www.hprl.org

  • Note: The Navigation structure for past Newsletter issues has changed. The newsletter (newslett.htm) page has a direct link to the current newsletter (click on the headline).  Below that is a navigation bar with oval buttons for home, up, archive, and one for each edition for the present year (click for the issue you want). Click on the archive button to see other past issues.  That will give you the ARCHIVE.htm page.  The first issue of each chapter year is listed.  The first issue (usually September) has a navigation bar for the rest of that year's issues.  Many of the issues have been loaded in a form that allows searching from the search box in the left margin.  However, many of the Newsletters are posted as pure images, and these cannot be searched (Go and read them.).

A "search box" has been added so you can search the content of the Newsletters and archives.  The search box appears in the left margin.  Page theme songs will not start automatically (hit "play" Songs may not work with some browsers).  For those using Mozilla to avoid the Microsoft Internet Chaos, the Quick Time player software comes with a player for the themes that also has a volume control, and this works fine with Mozilla.

Note: The morons are using bots to submit using the Comment Form.  Therefore, until I figure out how to use optical human verification software,  the feature will be disabled.  Please make your comments and suggestions the old fashioned way.  Send them to prestonoidaol.com.

Note: The automatic e-mail links of these pages are disabled and the "" which denotes an email address is an image.  We regret any inconvenience this may cause.  This will make it more difficult for data harvester bots to snatch our e-mail data.

Be sure Secretary has your current e-mail address.

ASSELA will not share these e-mail addresses with anyone!

We welcome your comments, questions, or suggestions.
