"The Future of the Safety Profession:
How to Stay Employed and Career Alternatives"
Dinner Meeting: Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at 5:30 PM
SAFETY…It’s Not a Career;
It’s My Passion!
There is no greater honor and no greater responsibility than to be elected by the members of this great Chapter to be your President. I am humbled by the entrusted privilege and I am fired up with enthusiasm for holding this high office.
I come on the heels of great Presidents who have diligently served before me. I thank our immediate past-President, Bob D’Amato, CSP, for his outstanding service this past year. Our Chapter is financially sound thanks to Bob, in particular, with regard to his devotion and time to marketing and administrating several well-attended Chapter seminars the past two years.
You and I as members of this Chapter are indeed very fortunate to be surrounded, administered, and inspired by our Executive Board comprised of LA ASSE members from all areas of the safety profession. Some of our Executive Board members are veterans of this honored profession and have served in this post, while others are the new rising stars and the future Presidents of the LA Chapter. Each Board member is making great sacrifices in time and energy devoted to ensuring that this Chapter grows and reflects the creative energies of the great Los Angeles community. I thank each and every member of the Executive Board for the support they collectively and individually demonstrate to serve all the LA Chapter members and for their support and guidance they constantly show to me.
As President I hope that the LA Chapter becomes Region One "Chapter of the Year." This lofty goal challenges me to be a top-performing leader and to serve the Chapter in many new and creative ways. Regardless of that goal, however, my service as your President is foremost and utmost directed to you, the ASSE member and to those people whom our Chapter touches.
In specific ways our Chapter meetings this year are being directed to present you with very relevant and timely issues—the issues you face nearly every day in this profession and on the job. Your LA ASSE Chapter is planning to present topics and speakers on subjects such as the future of the safety profession, workers’ compensation, technology, and the challenge of being "more productive" and of "greater value" to our employers. We will have topics on compliance issues and hold two seminars that not only serve our members, but that will serve and assist the small business owner who may otherwise have no other local resource as to what to do with "safety." Our reach to the small business owner will engage the marketing arm of several Chambers of Commerce within the boundaries of our Chapter. In this regard, LA ASSE will be the "outreach" to the unreached small business owner with regard to workplace safety. Usually ignored by insurance carriers because of premium thresholds and by authorities until there’s a serious injury or loss, our Chapter’s efforts will be to present information and programs designed to increase safety awareness, injury prevention, and awareness of ASSE to the local small business community. The possibilities for our Chapter’s reach within the Los Angeles are very wide in scope and very much within our reach as members of this Society.
We can and will do several great things this year. You are invited to be a part of the excitement and challenge this year at your ASSE Los Angeles Chapter. Safety is not just a career; it’s a passion! Come to our meetings and "catch" the energy of the dynamic, energetic Los Angeles Chapter.
Member attendance at the Chapter meetings has always been a "benchmark" that Chapter leadership looks at to gauge "success." Naturally, the more members of ASSE who come to the meetings the more the Chapter officers feel that certain goals have been accomplished and that the target has been met in terms of what members want.
The LA ASSE Chapter has had many great speakers and programs in the past. However, sometimes meeting attendance figures do not necessarily reflect the effort put out to get these speakers, the quality of the speakers, or the value of the meeting topic. Nevertheless, to encourage greater attendance this year from the LA ASSE Chapter members, the Chapter will be trying a few exciting changes to our meeting format. For example, there will be a limited number of seats available for those members who cannot arrive in time for the dinner meeting (traffic jams, work constraints, etc.), but who would otherwise like to come late to the meeting to hear the speaker and program.
To meet the specific need of late arrivals, the LA ASSE Chapter is trying a "room fee" where, for only $5, you’ll get a seat, a cup of coffee and the program. This change is effective with the first regular Chapter meeting to be held on Wednesday, September 10, at Stevens Steakhouse in the City of Commerce. If you cannot make the beginning of this dinner meeting that starts at 6:00 PM, plan to arrive around 7:00 PM to be part of the program for the nominal room fee of $5. Seats are limited, but the Chapter does encourage your attendance even if it’s just to "hear the speaker" and to say "hi" to your fellow members.

For those Los Angeles ASSE Chapter members who attend any four or more full Chapter meetings this year, the Chapter is holding a very special "VIP Program" where you’ll be invited to an exclusive event planned for Spring/Summer 2004. While this VIP-only event itself is still in the works, the Chapter is planning to hold a truly blockbuster event.
Plan now to attend our first meeting on Wednesday, September 10 at Stevens Steakhouse at 6:00 PM. Your attendance at that meeting will count toward the VIP Program reward. You’ll be given a VIP Passport and your first "stamp" and you’ll be on your way to become eligible for the big event planned for next year.
Can’t make the September 10 meeting? Don’t fret or even think about filing a "stress claim"; the Chapter is holding 9 more meetings and special seminars this year, and any combination of four will qualify you to be in the VIP Program.
The VIP Program – the LA ASSE Chapter’s way to say "thanks" for being a bigger part of the monthly meeting program.
